The municipality of Maribor is characterized by a long industrial tradition. This was first prompted by the railway, then by exploiting the Drava river's water potential. The development of textile, chemical and metal processing industries in Maribor ensued. The metal processing industry was particularly strong within the automotive industry.

 

There are still several industrial and business zones in Maribor today. Tezno business zone is one of the largest business zones in Slovenia (www. home to over 200 companies and covering an area of about 100 ha. Today at the Tezno business zone, very complex parts and assemblies are being created for the largest European car manufacturers such as Citroën, Peugeot, Ford, Magna Steyr, VW, Daimler-Mercedes Benz, and Iveco. In addition, more and more highly sophisticated parts for other sectors are built in the Tezno zone, including postal and logistics, banking and insurance, which mainly involve the field of the electronics and informatics.
